The first Namkhai Nyingpo was one of the five that King Trisong Detsen sent to India with the charge of securing sacred texts at the behest of Guru Padmasambhava in the 8th Century. He fulfilled his charge while others failed. Overcoming series of obstacles, he became an accomplished master who wielded the phurba, an esoteric ritual and magical tool for working with energy and principally the manifestation or activity of energy.
Namkhai Nyingpo means the ‘the essence of the space.’ He is counted as one of the 25 disciples of Guru Padmasambhava. Guru Prophesized that Namkhai Nyingpo and his successive reincarnate will benefit to the sentient beings.
Namkhai Nyingpo travelled wide and far concealing treasures, occasionally with Yeshe Tshogyal, throughout Tibet that were revealed later by tertoens.
In one incident, he once dropped his rosary while flying through the air. He left imprints of his five fingers in the earth, when he swooped down to pick it up. When Namkhai Nyingpo left for the pure land, not a trace of his body remained behind.
The present Namkhai Nyingpo is the 7th incarnate and was born in eastern Bhutan in 1966. He was recognized by the 16th Gyalwa Karmaapa. His Eminence ascended to his predecessor’s throne at the Kharchu Monastery in Bumthang in 1972 at the age of 6.
His Eminence received the Refuge Ordination from Gyalwa Karmapa and other sacred teachings from the Dalai Lama. His Eminence continued his intensive study with numerous masters including Dilgo Khentse and Khen Rinpoche.
His Eminence has concentrated on care and training of monks and nuns at his monasteries in Bhutan. He has given numerous teachings, empowerments and oral transmissions at his own monastery and at other places in Bhutan and abroad.
