Garlic is one of the most popular of the herbs and spices for many reasons, one is the flavor it adds to dishes and the other is the myriad of health benefits it offers. Following are its amazing health benefits.

1. Garlic helps lower blood pressure

Garlic contains allicin which is responsible for pungent odor and taste. Allicin relaxes the blood vessels. Garlic also has anti-clotting properties that prevent the formation of blood clots in the body. However, taking it in combination with blood thinning medications can be risky.

2. Garlic treats cold and cough

Garlic has been used for centuries as a remedy for cold and cough. This claim is supported by some laboratory evidences that garlic has antibacterial and antiviral properties. Garlic also helps with the flow of mucus in the sinuses and offer anti-inflammatory benefits.

3. Garlic boosts digestion

When garlic is swallowed, digestive juices in the stomach begin to dissolve compounds present in garlic. Digestive juices then get stimulated. From the small intestine, metabolized garlic compounds get absorbed into the different cells of your body including those of your liver, kidneys, plasma and muscles. Garlic can also reduce inflammation and irritation in the gastric canal.

4. Garlic treats yeast infection

Yeast infections aren’t dangerous, but they can be unpleasant in their odor and uncomfortable during urination and intercourse. Certain anti-fungal properties in garlic have the potency to treat it as yeasts are fungal in nature. Garlic can also treat athlete’s foot.  

5. Garlic prevents tooth decay

Human’s mouth has more than 500 bacteria. Some are good and some are not. Allicin, present in garlic, inhibits the growth of the bad bacteria and encourages the development of the population of good bacteria. Garlic, therefore, maintains oral health by maintaining the ratio of good and bad bacteria.

6. Garlic reduces cholesterol

There is no direct relationship between garlic and cholesterol level but the antioxidant properties of garlic prevent formation of plaques in arteries. This so happens by not allowing free radical damages to the arterial lining.

Garlic has also been shown to reduce homocyteine levels in the blood. High levels of homocysteine are directly linked to high cholesterol levels and cardiovascular disease.

7. Garlic improves bone health

Nutrients such as zinc, manganese, vitamin B6, and vitamin C in Garlic facilitate the formation of bones and connective tissues, bone metabolism, and calcium absorption. Garlic can increase estrogen levels and help strengthen bones in women.

8. Garlic treats Urinary Tract Infection

Scientists have found that garlic can help treat or prevent the growth of P. aeruginosa, a pathogen that colonizes the urinary tract walls and is responsible for recurring UTIs and kidney infections. Garlic is also effective against E.coli growth in the urinary tract.

9. Garlic removes heavy metal from body

Numerous studies have found that garlic reduces lead levels in the blood. That’s because of sulfur compounds present in garlic. Sulfur actually oxidizes heavy metals such as lead, making them water soluble, and letting them get out of the body system.  

10. Garlic boosts immune system

Garlic is good for everything, right? It contains natural antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. It lowers blood pressure, treats cold and infection, improves bone health and boosts digestion. It prevents lots of diseases and illnesses. These all lead to long and healthy life. Without a doubt, garlic definitely is an immune system boosting food.
