The sitting Statue of Buddha Dordenma in Thimphu is one of the biggest Buddha statues in the world. Buddha Dordenma means Diamond-throned Buddha. The statue is 42 meter tall made with bronze.
It is located on the exact ruins of Kuensel Phodrang, the palace of Sherab Wangchuk, the 13th Regent of Bhutan, overlooking the southern approach to Thimphu. His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo supported the land for the statue, access road, and the drinking water supply.
Construction, under the supervision of His Holiness the Jekhenpo Trulku Jigme Choeda, began in 2006 funded by sponsors from Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China. The statue was completed in 2015. His Holiness consecrated the statue in dedication to the 60th birth anniversary celebration of His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
The construction of Buddha Statue was prophesied by Guru Padmasambhava. It was also prophesied by Lam Sonam Zangpo (1888-1982), that a large statue of either Guru Padmasambhava, Buddha or of a (Vajrakilaya) phurba would be built in the region to bestow blessings, peace and happiness in the world.
